Most of the BCB directors had advised against taking drastic steps. However, after knowing the government’s stance, they changed their decision.

Sports advisor Asif Nazrul confirmed the matter in a Facebook post and wrote, “Bangladesh will not go to India to play the World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has taken this decision today. We welcome this decision taken in the context of the Indian Cricket Board’s extremist communal policies.”

The issue of the safety of Bangladesh cricketers in the World Cup has come to the fore since Mustafiz was excluded from the IPL yesterday due to threats from extremists. A BCB source said that this is mainly why the BCB decided to send a letter to the ICC requesting a change of venue.

India and Sri Lanka are the joint hosts of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. Bangladesh are scheduled to face West Indies in Kolkata, India on the first day of the tournament on February 7. The remaining three matches in the group stage are all in Kolkata and Mumbai.
