FIFA World Cup is knocking on the door. If everything goes well, the Football World Cup will start on June 11. There have been 22 Football World Cups from 1930 to 2022.

Brazil tops the all-time World Cup rankings

80 teams have played in the main stage of past World Cups. The all-time rankings are based on the performance of those teams.

The World Cup rankings are based on a uniform points system. For all tournaments, 3 points are awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw. In this historical ranking, the total points are taken into account first. If the points of the two teams are equal, then the goal difference, that is, the difference between how many goals have been scored and how many have been conceded, is used as the second tiebreaker. If there is still a tie, the total number of goals is taken into account.

The Brazilian national team is at the top of the list. Brazil is the only team that has participated in every World Cup from 1930 to 2022. As a result, if they play in the 2026 World Cup, this will be their 23rd consecutive participation. Brazil is still considered the most traditional and successful team in the tournament due to its consistent presence, five-time champions and numerous legendary footballers.

The German national team is in second place in terms of World Cup participation. As of 2022, they have played in 20 World Cups, the record of West Germany and reunified Germany combined. Then Argentina and Italy are in joint third place, both teams have played in 18 World Cups. And Mexico has participated in 17 tournaments.

Argentina is in third place in history in terms of the number of World Cup participations. The ‘Albicelestera’ first played in the 1930 World Cup. However, they did not participate in the 1938, 1950, 1954 and 1970 tournaments. After that, Argentina played regularly in every World Cup from 1974 to 2022. As a result, if they participate in the 2026 World Cup, Argentina’s total World Cup appearances will stand at 19.

Despite not winning a trophy after 2002, the Brazilian team still tops the all-time World Cup ranking table. They have a total of 247 points from 76 wins, 19 draws and 19 losses in 114 matches. And on this path, Brazil has scored 237 goals and their goal difference is +129. They have also won five World Cups. They won their first title in the 1958 World Cup. Then the ‘Seleção’ won the World Cup in 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.

Germany is in second place in the all-time ranking. They have 225 points from 112 matches. Their consistent success in the World Cup is evidenced by their four-time champion. Germany won the first World Cup in 1954. Then they won the trophy in 1974, 1990 and 2014. In addition, Germany has played in the final eight times, which makes them one of the most consistently successful teams in World Cup history.

Current champions Argentina are in third place

Argentina is in third place in the all-time points list of the World Cup. They have collected 158 points from 47 wins, 17 draws and 24 losses in 88 matches. Argentina has scored 152 goals and their goal difference is +51. Argentina’s three titles came in 1978, 1986 and 2022. In addition, their achievement of playing in the final six times in total has established them as one of the best teams in history.

Although they are ahead of Argentina in World Cup wins, Italy is in fourth place in the all-time points list. They have collected 156 points with 45 wins in 83 matches, which is only 2 points less than Argentina. Italy’s goal difference is also +51. Not being able to participate in three consecutive World Cups has also put Italy behind them. Italy’s four World Cups came in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.

Two-time world champions France are at number 5 on the list. They have collected 131 points with 39 wins in 73 matches, and their goal difference is +51. France won their first World Cup in 1998. Then they won their second World Cup in 2018. Apart from that, they lost in the finals in 2006 and 2022.
