Egypt reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Benin 3-1 in the last 16 match. The scoreline made the match look easy, but in reality it was a tough fight. The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation time, so Salah had to wait until extra time to win.
Egypt ensure quarter-finals after defeating Benin
After a 1-1 draw in regulation time in Agadir, Egypt took the lead again in extra time through a powerful header from Yasser Ibrahim. Mohamed Salah scored in the 123rd minute of the match to secure the team’s victory and further brighten his name in Africa Cup of Nations history. With the goal, his total number of goals in the tournament reached 10, which puts him third in the list of Egypt’s top scorers. He is followed by Hassan El Shazli (12) and Hossam Hassan (11).
Seven-time Africa Cup of Nations winners Egypt have reached the quarter-finals for the third time in the last five editions. They will remain in Agadir until January 10 for the last-eight matches. Their opponents in the quarter-finals will be the winner of the match between defending champions Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso.
